High-rise Safety

Do you live in a high-rise building?

Your chance of surviving a hire-rise fire greatly increases when you know what to do. Before a fire occurs, have an escape plan and practice the escape. If a fire occurs, the most important thing to do is sound the alarm and get out.

Stay safe in a high rise by following these tips

Plan for a fire before it occurs

Learn where ALL the exits are in your building. Participate in fire drills and know evacuation plans.

sound the alarm and exit

Sound the fire alarm, no matter how small the fire seems to be. Do not use the elevators to exit the building.

Close the door on fires

As you are exiting close the door behind you. This will contain the fire and keep other occupants safe.

Stay calm!

If you encounter smoke, stay calm and crawl low. Don’t panic and evacuate calmly.

Keep stairwells clear

Stairwells are essential to highrise safety. Don’t store things in stairwells that can block the exit or catch on fire.

Prevent fires from starting

Don’t overload outlets and keep heat-producing devices away from things that burn. Smoke only where permitted and use large ashtrays.
