Home FIRE ESCAPE PLANS

Being prepared can save you and your family’s life in a house fire. It is important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds.

Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them!

Check out the Fire Safety Action Plan (Spanish) and make your Home Escape Plan (Spanish) to make sure your family is prepared!

EVERY SECOND COUNTS!

Plan ahead! If there is a fire in your home, you could have less than 2 minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Everyone needs to know what to do and where to go if there is a fire.

If your alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Never go back inside for people or pets. Once you are outside dial 911.

Know two ways out of every room

This is usually a door and a window. Make sure windows open easily.

Have an outside meeting place

Have a stationary outside meeting place, like a tree, light pole, or mailbox that is a safe distance from your home.

Practice twice a year

Everyone in the home should practice fire drills in the day and night time twice a year. Practice different ways out!

Get out and stay out

Once you are outside, stay outside! Do not go back inside the house for any reason. Dial 911 immediately!

Get low and go

If there is smoke, crawl low under the smoke on the way out. Smoke is hot and full of deadly chemicals.
