Fire safety for older adults

Did you know that adults over 65 are twice as likely to die in fires?
Smoke alarms are important to have in your home to alert you if there is a fire.

Be safe by following these tips

Think about your NEeds

Keep your glasses, hearing aids, cane, or wheelchair close to your bed at night. If there is an emergency you will be able to grab them quickly.

Be ready, Stay Steady

Falls can be detrimental and lead to other serious health problems. To prevent falls, exercise to stay strong and have your vision checked.

Shine a light on safety

Turn on lights before using the stairs and place night lights between your bedroom and the bathroom.

Don’t slip up

Use nonslip mats in your bathtub or shower; consider using a bath seat. Install grab bars in your shower and tub. Consider taping down or removing loose rugs.

Butt out

Never smoke where medical oxygen is used. Medical oxygen can explode if a flame or spark is near. Even if the oxygen is turned off, it can still catch on fire.

Can you hear your Alarm?

If you can’t hear your smoke alarm, consider getting a strobe light alarm or a bed shaker to alert you if there is a fire.
